How to Promote Your Book Without Being a Jerk

Book promotion is hard enough without feeling like you’re annoying people. Here are five proven tips for book promotion success with confidence!

Repetition. It’s one of the hardest parts of marketing.

Fact: the best way to get people’s attention is to tell them about your book, event, special deal, etc more than once.

It actually takes anywhere from 3-10 mentions through different channels to get someone’s attention and nudge them to consider your stuff.

Yup, 3-10 times. Especially with social media algorithms making it harder for people to see things anything, and the information overload of the present day making it harder to remember things.

So the question is, how on earth do you get your stuff in front of people without driving them crazy?

First, you have to go back to why your book is important. Why are your goals and message vital? Why is it important that THIS BOOK reach readership? That solid foundation is crucial.

Acting from confidence is a real thing, people. And investing in your own vision so that you are secure is priceless.

Once you have that confidence, it’s time to tackle the nuts and bolts of non-obnoxious repetition!

1.) Accept the fact that people, especially people who are not your ideal readers, may find you annoying.

This might not even be your issue. Someone might just have had a bad day, got into an argument with a loved one, lost a dear friend, or stepped on a Lego. And then they see your post and just let loose. 

I’m all for living in peace with people, but part of putting yourself out there is accepting that you are not for all markets and sometimes that means people will disagree with you loudly, and it isn’t always your fault.

This is another reason support groups are critical. It is super valuable to get feedback and encouragement on your promotions.

2.) Show your audience cool things that you know they’ll want to see.

Of course, you’ve already researched your ideal reader, right? If not, start with that! Ask questions, check out what other authors are doing, get a feel for the expectations of your genre. 

Understand: readers want books. Even readers who are on budgets. So your goal is to put your book content and shinies out there to attract those readers! 

Some ideas for awesome free content to attract readers:

  • book quotes in awesome graphics (check out this video for details)
  • cover reveals
  • character conversations
  • behind-the-scenes moments
  • character takeovers
  • giveaways
  • cool articles from your book research

 Sharing cool things from your book helps people remember that YOU EXIST in ways that offer them something fun and unique

3.) Be an honest promoter of things you love.

This means getting excited over other people’s stuff and sharing that stuff around. Generosity is a beautiful thing. 

ALSO, note that it says “things you love.” Depending on your personality, it could be tempting to say “well, I don’t really like this content, but the person is super-popular. What could it hurt to share?” 

Sharing things you aren’t excited about might work for a cover reveal (because those can be beautiful regardless) but beware about not being true to your unique words.  

For the sake of your own authenticity and reputation, promote things you truly enjoy and stand behind.

4.) Team up with others.

You can all be crazy marketers together! 

Cross-promotion is a beautiful thing. This also means making sure you show reciprocity, both in actual shares (if you commit to sharing, then share), and in the quality of your work. 

Think about going to a potluck/bring-and-share where you brought day-old hamburger casserole and sat it next to a prime rib. No one will say anything if they’re polite, but it’s not great form. So make sure your book content and packaging (blurb, book cover, etc) are the best they can be. This makes it so much easier to share.

5.) Do not constantly talk about your books 24/7.

Here are other ideas for sharing:

  • Share about other parts of yourself
  • Post up memes or quotes or stuff you find meaningful
  • Share blog posts you’re interested in
  • Share about other hobbies you have
  • Share about books you’re enjoying or TV shows you like 
  • Talk about your pets
  • Ask questions

If you’re a list-maker, make a list of topics you can reliably share once a day, twice a day, whatever your schedule, and then share them. 🙂 I’ve just given you a starter pack of ideas–run with it!

    Well, there just aren’t very many science fiction books that focus on living cross-culturally with aliens from the perspective of a Human linguist. I love languages and crossing cultures, and I love aliens. No Road Among the Stars is my story about what it’s like to have aliens as classmates, living, working, eating and arguing together.

      *nods* One main commonality you have there is the universal theme of cross-cultural connection and the quirky/frustrating/fascinating differences between different cultures and species. There can be a lot to mine for humor and pathos in marketing!

But I’ll say mine is important because it presents an inspiring heroine who overcomes fear and isolation to stand up to overwhelming enemies threatening her community. It touches on various types of bullying and challenges people to do what’s right even if it makes them an outcast.
